When Do You Need an Air Conditioner Diagnosis & Repair?

by Air Conditioning

HVAC systems are fairly resilient, especially the newer, more efficient systems. However, especially the heat pump and equipment open to the outdoor elements can be damaged or fail from time to time. Fortunately, in most instances the damage can be repaired, allowing HVAC systems to continue to run top notch for many years.

So how do you know if your Air Conditioning System may be failing? Here are some signs that you need to call and schedule a Diamondback AC & Heating Technician to perform a full diagnosis your system to find out what underlying components may be failing:

1. Short Cycling

Your air conditioner turns on for 10 seconds. Then it turns off for 5 seconds. Then it continues to turn on and off again in this manner without stopping.

Short cycling is a malfunction that causes your heat pump to rapidly turn on and off for short periods of time, normally between four and seven seconds per cycle. If you notice constant, short bursts of activity, you’re experiencing short cycling. The causes of short cycling vary from minor malfunctions to major problems that will require new parts or in rare cases even a new furnace. Often, short-cycling is the result of overheating in the unit, which leads safety features to automatically shut it down.

The trouble is that it never reaches the temperature that it’s supposed to reach. Why? Because short cycling requires repair.

Identifying and addressing an overactive, short-cycling HVAC system will help you avoid increased energy costs and long-term damage to your HVAC System.

2. Leakage By the Air Conditioner Condenser

Another sign that you require air conditioner repair is that there is fluid leaking next to your air conditioner condenser. This fluid is almost certainly refrigerant, the fluid that powers the entire air conditioning process. Without it, your air conditioner will cease to function entirely.

Fortunately, it can be fairly easily replenished. Just schedule one of our Pro HVAC Technicians to refill your system with refrigerant and then patch up the hole that allowed the refrigerant to leak out in the first place.

3. Strange Noises

Air conditioners are designed to make some noises. Primarily, these noises will be whirring noises caused by the propeller in the condenser. These are normal and expected.

But if you start hearing noises aside from these noises, you have only reason to believe that your air conditioner is suffering from a problem of some kind. What this problem might be is dependent on the sound that you’re hearing.

Squeaking noises are often indicative of loose or worn down belts. Grinding or banging noises are often indicative of damage within the condenser.

Regardless, the second you hear a strange noise from your air conditioner, you need to call a reputable HVAC Services Company, like Diamondback AC & Heating. They’ll take a look at your unit, identify the problem, and work to fix it.

4. Lack of Cold Air

The whole point of an air conditioner is to produce cold air. If it’s failing to do this, there’s no doubt about it: it’s broken.
